About

The National Trust for Canada’s Next Great Save competition is on a mission. Our mission is to help a community save a heritage place that matters to them, with a $50,000 prize generously provided by Ecclesiastical Insurance. The prize money can be used for a project that will adapt, renew or improve their heritage place for the future, and inspire us all in the process.

Heritage places are critical for sustainable communities, central to responding to climate change, and vital to our collective wellbeing and sense of belonging. Yet every day more are lost. The Next Great Save competition is our way of highlighting the impact of saving an endangered place, helping renew one of these places, and getting people from coast-to-coast-to-coast involved in the process.

How to Vote

Everyone from everywhere can vote for their favourite project! You can vote once per day – and you can vote for a different project every day if you wish. To vote: Select “vote” for the project you choose, enter your name and email address, and then click the link in the confirmation email. If you do not see this email, please check your spam folder.

The competition begins on Friday, January 20, 2023, at 2pm Eastern Time (11am Pacific Time) and closes on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 2pm Eastern Time (11am Pacific Time).

What is a Great Save?

A Great Save is a project that successfully adapts, retrofits, renews, or improves a heritage place in a way that extends its useful life, and more, such as:

  • responding to new pressures and community needs such as climate change or affordable housing;
  • reducing environmental impact;
  • reflecting diversity and inclusion of new voices and new stories; and/or
  • offering experiences, education, and inspiration to many.

Rules & regulations

The Next Great Save is a platform for organizations to showcase the places and stories important to them in their own words. As the host, the National Trust for Canada recognizes that Canada’s history and heritage is complex and contentious, dominated by settler perspectives, and that individually or collectively the stories may lack diversity.

Next Great Save projects were selected to participate in the competition based on their eligibility and the evaluation of their submission using the criteria outlined in the Next Great Save Submission Guidelines and Eligibility.

Ecclesiastical Insurance is deeply committed to protecting the needs of organizations that enrich the lives of others; to preserving Canada’s distinct communities, cultures and history; and to supporting initiatives that help improve the lives of people in need. The National Trust for Canada has a long-standing relationship with Ecclesiastical Insurance – our most faithful sponsor – and we are excited to work with them to help fund the Next Great Save!
