Election Day: April 28, 2025
This federal election is a crucial moment to ensure heritage is part of Canada’s future. With growing concerns around housing, climate change, and cultural identity, it’s more important than ever that our elected leaders prioritize heritage places in national policy.
The National Trust is calling on all Canadians to speak up. Our 2025 Election Toolkit equips you to ask candidates where they stand on key heritage issues—locally and nationally. Your voice can help shape the future of heritage in Canada.

Ask the Candidates: Where Do They Stand on Heritage?
When candidates come knocking or participate in public debates, use these questions to push heritage to the forefront of the conversation:
- What will your party do to ensure that Canada encourages the re-use and retrofit of older (including heritage) buildings – an essential part of increasing Canada’s housing supply, climate strategy, and economic self-reliance.
- Will your government re-introduce legislation in Parliament to better protect Canada’s nationally significant heritage places?
- Will your party support additional funding for youth employment in heritage, helping foster the next generation of heritage workers?
- Will your party support substantial new funding to the National Cost-Sharing Program for Heritage Places, helping save Canada’s National Historic Sites for future generations?
Why This Matters
Heritage places are essential to Canada’s identity and future. They:
- Connect us to our shared history and diverse stories
- Support local economies and skilled jobs
- Offer climate-wise solutions through adaptive reuse
- Provide vibrant spaces for community and culture
This election, help us show decision-makers that Canadians care about heritage. Let’s ensure that the places we value are preserved, celebrated, and supported—for all Canadians, now and in the future.
