Application Guidelines


Please read the General Rules and Regulations.

The Herb Stovel Scholarship provides two types of bursaries:

  1. Project Research Bursaries up to $2,500 for candidates who propose special projects, results-oriented travel and participation at conferences, and events that continue Herb’s passion for community innovation and/or international dialogue in built heritage conservation theory and practice. Applications that are focused only on general tuition expenses will not be considered.
  2. National Trust Conference Bursaries cover the cost of travel, conference accommodation and registration (approximate value $1,000) for candidates to attend the National Trust’s Annual Conference.

Please note:

  • Project research bursaries will not cover activities or expenses directly related to the applicant’s employment.
  • Project research bursaries will not cover activities or expenses already incurred.

Eligibility Criteria

The Herb Stovel Scholarship is open to Canadians between the ages of 20 and 35 who are either:

  • Students pursuing post-secondary or graduate studies in built heritage conservation; or
  • Emerging professionals working in the field of built heritage conservation.

*The heritage field, for the purpose of the Scholarship, is defined as heritage conservation, museum studies, heritage planning, and cultural heritage.


Application Process

National Trust Conference Bursary Applications must include:

1. A statement of interest expressing what you hope to gain from attending the conference.

    • Rationale as to why your work or studies will be enhanced by attending the National Trust conference
    • How will your learnings be applied to your education or work after the conference?
    • How this opportunity reflects Herb Stovel’s contribution to and/or interests in the field.

2. A Curriculum Vitae demonstrating your studies or work in heritage.

Please be sure to include contact information for at least one reference who is aware of your studies or work in heritage. The C.V. must also include contact information for at least one reference knowledgeable of your work and studies in the heritage field*.

3. Proof of student status (if applicable)

The following will be accepted as proof of student status:

  • Photocopy of your student ID (the card must display the year of enrollment)
  • Email or letter from the registrar
  • Copy of online confirmation of registration status (must contain the school’s website address identifying the source of the website)

Please note that letters of acceptance and confirmations of enrollment for previous years will not be accepted as a form of proof of student status.

4. Proof of Canadian citizenship

The following may be submitted as proof of Canadian citizenship:

  • Photocopy of your birth certificate from a Canadian province or territory
  • Photocopy of your valid Canadian passport
  • Photocopy of your certificate of Canadian citizenship

 

Project Research Bursary Applications must include:

1. A written proposal (max. 1,000 words)

The proposal must outline the applicant’s recent achievements and aspirations in the heritage conservation field, and the relevance of the proposed educational program or conference attendance to the applicant’s course of study, current research, or professional development; and demonstrate an awareness of Herb Stovel’s contribution to and/or interests in the field.

Please include:

  • Proposed dates of study or conference attendance: The proposed dates must be after the application deadline and before the disbursement deadline of December 31 of the following year.
  • Estimated project and/or travel costs: Please include an estimate of your project and/or travel costs. Applications that are focused only on general tuition expenses will not be considered.

2. A brief Curriculum Vitae, including references

Please be sure to include up to three academic or professional references, including contact information. Your references must be aware of your studies or work in heritage.

3. Proof of student status (if applicable)

The following will be accepted as proof of student status:

  • Photocopy of your student ID (the card must display the year of enrollment)
  • Email or letter from the registrar
  • Copy of online confirmation of registration status (must contain the school’s website address identifying the source of the website)

4. Proof of Canadian citizenship
