The Wing Sang Building — now home to the first Chinese Canadian Museum in Canada — is the oldest brick building in Vancouver’s Chinatown and was once the residence and business hub of Chinese Canadian merchant Yip Sang.

The historic Wing Sang Building was constructed in 1889 by Yip Sang to house his various businesses. The name “Wing Sang” means “Everlasting” in Chinese. Over time, the building expanded into a six-storey home for Yip Sang and his growing family, who lived there for nearly 100 years.

Today, as the Chinese Canadian Museum, the building features exhibitions and a community space for special programs and events that welcome people of all ages and backgrounds. It is a place where we honour Chinese Canadian history, contributions, and heritage.

Since opening on July 1, 2023, the museum has launched both temporary and permanent exhibitions in its historic home. The family-friendly museum also hosts special tours, such as for school groups, and offers public programs — including panel talks, workshops, and activities — to create learning opportunities for visitors and foster community engagement.

Preserving history, the School Room located on the third floor of the building, is also one of the oldest school rooms in Vancouver.
