2025


Mackenzie Campbell

Project Research Bursary

Mackenzie Campbell is a heritage conservationist and stained-glass artist based in Ontario. She is the Project Manager at The Brown Homestead, where she leads building conservation work and fosters public engagement with traditional trades.

The Herb Stovel Scholarship will support Mackenzie’s study of traditional glass painting in Italy – deepening her understanding of stained glass as both a craft and a form of cultural heritage. This hands-on learning experience will directly inform her work around the preservation of historic stained glass in Canada.


Dana Murray

Project Research Bursary

Dana Murray is a PhD student at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information studying disasters and cultural heritage.

Her research examines the effects of extreme weather events on gallery, library, archive, and museum (GLAM) practitioners as they seek to navigate professional and personal duties in periods of crisis, as well as the emergent practices that stem from this tension. She is honoured to receive the Herb Stovel Scholarship which will support her doctoral fieldwork in conducting an institutional ethnographic study of Puerto Rican GLAM institutions in the wake of Hurricane Maria.


Luke ‘Lucca’ Crawford

Conference Bursary

Lucca is a Heritage Carpenter from Labrador by way of Charlottetown, PEI. They work with the PEI Museum & Heritage Foundation across their seven sites keeping up the various heritage buildings under their care. Lucca has a varied background, originally in theatre with a BFA Stagecraft – Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in 2013, then pivoting with the Heritage Retrofit Carpentry through Holland College in 2019, and most recently attaining their Red Seal in Carpentry – also through Holland College.

For Lucca, receiving the Herb Stovel Conference bursary to attend the 2025 Annual Conference will be another excellent opportunity for personal and professional growth.


Sophie Palermo

Conference Bursary

Sophie is a master’s student in Civil Engineering at McGill University in Montreal, QC.

She has strong research interests in the characterization of Type O mortar for restoration projects. Being a beneficiary of the 2025 Herb Stovel conference bursary will enable Sophie to attend the annual conference where she believes exposure to discussions about adaptive reuse, conservation best practices and climate resilience among other things will be helpful to shaping her research.


2024


Katie Wilson

Project Research Bursary

Katie is a second-year student in the Masters of Conservation of Monuments and Sites (MCMS) Program at Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven in Belgium.

Her research project will focus on field work, consisting of the documentation of abandoned wood structures in the Ottawa Valley, Katie’s hometown. The gathering of photos and measured documents will support her thesis dealing with the treatment of abandoned and disused timber structures in this geographic area.


Fiona Hamilton

Project Research Bursary

Fiona is from Fredericton, New Brunswick and is currently an intern architect, embarking on a PhD in Built Heritage (Architecture) at the University of Antwerp, Belgium.

Her project research bursary will enable her to enroll in a blended, intensive program: Cultural Heritage and Planning on the European Landscape, a 5-day intensive workshop hosted by Heriland in Gothenburg, Sweden.


Paloma Castonguay-Rufino

Project Research Bursary

Paloma Castonguay-Rufino is an individualized Ph.D. student in architecture at the School of Architecture of the Université de Montréal. After obtaining a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in architecture, she completed a professional internship specializing in the conservation of built heritage. Her doctoral research lies at the intersection of architectural and heritage considerations. In a reflexive approach, she takes a critical look at the notion of industrial heritage across Canada, through the analysis of projects that reuse urban industrial remains. The Herb Stovel Scholarship will help support data collection for case studies in large Canadian cities.


David Seaman

National Trust Conference Bursary

David, from Beamsville, Ontario is a recipient of the Herb Stovel Conference Bursary which enabled him to attend the 2024 National Trust – APT Joint Conference in Montreal, QC November 12-16. David is in his final year at Trent University, majoring in Archaeology with a specialization in Mediterranean Archaeology, and a minor in History.

 


Jemma Johnson

National Trust Conference Bursary

Jemma, from Ottawa Ontario is a recipient of the Herb Stovel Conference Bursary which enabled her to attend the 2024 National Trust – APT Joint Conference in Montreal, QC November 12-16. Jemma received her Bachelor of Architectural Studies, with Honors from Carleton University in May 2024.


Alexander Duda

National Trust Conference Bursary

Alexander, from Ottawa Ontario, is a recipient of the Herb Stovel Conference Bursary which enabled him to attend the 2024 National Trust – APT Joint Conference in Montreal, QC November 12-16. Alexander attained an Advanced diploma in Applied Museum Studies from Algonquin College in 2020 and is currently completing a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, with a Major in History and Minor in Art History from Carleton University.


Maha Abbas

National Trust Conference Bursary

Maha, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is a recipient of the Herb Stovel Conference Bursary which enabled her to attend the 2024 National Trust – APT Joint Conference in Montreal, QC November 12-16. She attained her Honours of Arts from the University of Toronto in 2021, with a specialization in Architecture: Comprehensive Stream with a Minor in Visual Studies.


Paige Murray

National Trust Conference Bursary

Paige is from London, Ontario, and is a recipient of the Herb Stovel Conference Bursary which enabled her to attend the 2024 National Trust – APT Joint Conference in Montreal, QC November 12-16. She attained a Bachelor of Arts, with an Honours Specialization in History and Minor in Medieval Studies in 2023, and is currently working towards a Master’s in Public History, both from the University of Western Ontario.

Maryssa Barras

Project Research Bursary

Maryssa Barras, of Waterloo, Ontario, is the recipient of a project research bursary. Maryssa’s research project will contribute to discourse on cultural and built landscapes by exploring the relationship between materiality and intangibility and the benefits of collaboration between archaeologists and planners.
