2025 Governors Awards

InSite App Poster | Manitoba Historical Society

The National Trust for Canada’s Board of Governors has presented the Manitoba Historical Society with a Governors’ Award for their development of the MHS InSite App.

The Manitoba Historical Society, founded in 1879, is Western Canada’s oldest historical organization – devoted to preserving, interpreting, and sharing Manitoba’s right and diverse heritage. For nearly a century and a half, the Society has championed the study of Manitoba’s past, ensuring that stories of the people that shaped the province remain alive for future generations.

Their latest innovation, the MHS InSite app, brings that mission into the digital age. Launched in July 2024 during the National Trust’s annual Historic Places Days, the app invites residents, students, tourists, and history enthusiasts to explore buildings, museums, cemeteries, and historic sites across the province through an interactive map and easy search features. In its first week, the app was downloaded 5,000 times, demonstrating the public’s enthusiasm for accessible, engaging ways to explore local heritage.

The Governors have chosen to highlight this project as a creative and forward-looking example of how digital innovation can make heritage knowledge more accessible and inspiring for all.
